Breeding and raising quality rabbits

           HIMALAYANS

The Himalayan has been known for more than 150 years. The breed's country of origin, including the source of its name, is unknown. Contrary to the name, though, it is unlikely that the Himalayan came from the Himalayan mountain range, regardless of early fanciful accounts of wild Himalayan rabbits living there. Perhaps the early developers of the breed were captivated by the exotic sounding locale. The Himalayan has been known by a variety of names, including Chinese, African, Ruissan and Polish.  Some of the first HImalayans were recodred in the mid-1800s. Enlgish breeders of Silver rabbits found Himalayans in their litters. In one case, the breeder noted that he obtained Himalayans from tame silver-gray rabbits crossed with wild rabbits of the same color who were kept in warrens (a structure where rabbits are kept and bred). Another account published in 1880 decribes the importation of Himalayans from China. the author stated that the rabbit was found on both sides of the mountain range and was superior to the English variety. Because of the value of his skin, the Himalayan was imported and bred in many countries, including Ruissa, Egypt, Germany and France.  Himalayans were imported into the United States from England at the tunr of the 20th century and were officially recognized by ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) in 1910.  " Good Rabbitkeeping, A comprehensive Guide to all Things Rabbit" by Sue Fox
